Richard Gere, Debra Winger. A romance classic where a young man who wants to fly jets joins the Navy to become an Aviator Pilot. In the meantime, a young ambitious and rambunctious young factory worker and her girlfriend can’t wait for the weekends they put on their finest game face and venture over to the Naval Training Academy in hopes of finding and marrying a dreamy Naval Pilot someday who will swoop them away from their little homegrown dull and biring lives in a podunk little dull and boring hometow.
They must feel so emotionally stranded, so hopeless, so alone. The darkness chasing after them wanting to grasp them in it’s eternal embrace. And the hart breaking thing is that they are the best and the brightest we have as a society to offer. I felt greatly for Sid Sorley he just wanted to be loved for who he was he was an emotionally damaged kid.
Sadly, suicide in our society is completely misunderstood. People think that it is the act of a coward. An act of volition. Their are chemicals in the brain and spinal column that if they ever dip below a certain level anyone no matter how tough you think they are, how religious, disciplined, will begin to have suicidal thoughts.
This is why I ached as I saw Sorley hurt so much for no good resason. Modern medicne now has medications which prevent this from happening. Theirs therapy. I wept as Sorley needlessly killed himself how easily it could have been avoided if he had just been under the care of a professional. But this movie is to some extent about the redeeming power of true love the love felt between Richard Geer’s character and the beautiful girl next door female lead.
I cheered as I’m sure you did when he swept her up and carried her away like some dime store romance novel hero. Mayo who has emotional issues do to the suicide of his mother, his raising and intimacy issues do to being raised ‘on top of the raunciest whore house in the Philipine Island.
But that’s not even my favorite scene. Mine is when Geer wakes up after a night of love making and find his now girlfriend making breakfast in the kitchen. This demonstrates that love is not always an epic quest depicted in romance movies or novels. It is for more ordinary people, well, more ordinary waking up and realizing that some one cares for you because they made breakfast.
I love the conversation that ensues in that scene that was when they had both stopped playing cards and were really falling in love. This is a wonderful movie. About very adult topics if it’s suitable it could be shown at the H. Excellent movie. It’s an old movie, but it’s still a good watcher to this day. A must watch if you love the Top Gun movies. One of my all time favourites. In my opinion, one of the best films ever made, being a massive fan of Richard Gere this has been in my collection of all his films for a long time, I bough this for my neighbour who wanted a copy. An Officer and a Gentleman is a good drama that relies on a predictable story, but manages to be entertaining due to the performances of its cast. I thought. The movie takes place in and around a Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School in Washington state. Every thirteen weeks, a new group of young. A young man must complete his work at a Navy Officer Candidate School to become an aviator, with the help of a tough Gunnery Sergeant and his new girlfriend.

He represents the parental love that Mayo truly craves. His father is worse than useless. One of those cut scenes would have seen Mayo saluting his dad — a nod to their conversation at the start of the film. Instead, the film skips to that iconic final scene between Paula and Mayo. But what gets lost along the way is why.
Instead we see Mayo graduate alone, say goodbye to Foley, and then rock up at the factory. Most of their scenes are about sex or playing house rather than dates or hanging out.
Instead, Mayo turns to Foley to express how he feels. He turns up at the military base and picks a fight. He graduates, salutes Foley, and goes to meet Paula at the factory. Without Foley, there would be no romantic resolution. And without Foley, there would no be resolution to the family tragedy and tension that the movie opens with.

Lou Gossett, Jr. Debra Winger is also delectable as Paula, Zach’s working class girlfriend.
I had read that Winger had a real problem doing the nude scenes with Gere and felt very uncomfortable being undressed in front of the camera. Supposedly the scene in which she is crying while making love to Zach isn’t because she’s feeling passion, it is because she is feeling humiliated. The movie also had to snip out a couple of seconds of Winger flexing her hips a bit too much during a bed scene. Still one of the steamiest bed scenes in film history. Powerful moment.
