Census Bureau data and applied a mathematical formula to rank communities according to the distribution of residents who described themselves as “white,” “black or African-American,” “Asian,” “other” or “hispanic or Latino. A perfect diversity score according to the formula would go to a community whose population included 20 percent of each group — a perfectly even distribution.

The more a community deviated from that perfect distribution, the less diverse we considered it to be.
