Know what you’re training for, and you’ll get there much more quickly. If you’re lifting the same weight or running the same distance each week, how are you ever going to improve? In order for a training programme to be successful it must apply the principle of progression, meaning that you must be consistently looking to better your results.

Progression comes in many forms; adding more weight, more repetitions, more distance, faster speed or less rest. However you do it, progression is about achieving better results every time you go out on the track or in the gym. This may sound overly simplistic, but it’s amazing how many people can get stuck in a rut with their training if they’re not consistently looking to progress. This principle works closely with progression. As your body adapts to the demands of your training, you must apply the principle of overload in order to progress.

This means pushing your body outside of your comfort zone to a limit that will force it to adapt – this may be putting more weight on a bar, or adding an extra kilometre onto your run. The principle of overload can be applied in a number of ways, but the key is to keep challenging your body in order to drive progress.

No training programme is complete without adequate attention to recovery. For motivated athletes, this is often the hardest components to grasp, but it is essential in order to keep applying the principles of progression and overload. If you do not allow your body sufficient time to recover, it won’t be able to adapt and grow stronger, meaning all your hard work in training will bear no fruit.

There are many factors that can affect your recovery, most notably your sleep and nutrition. For more information about how to optimise your recovery, read this article. Granted, the final part of the S. T jigsaw could quite easily have been written as just ‘Individual’ or ‘Individuality. I doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, does it?

The most important part of any successful training programme is that it is tailored to The Individual. For this purpose, then, Tom applied to Mr Western’s daughter, a young lady of about seventeen years of age, whom her father, next after those necessary implements of sport just before mentioned, loved and esteemed above all the world.

Jim has given up that sport himself and confines himself to a little harmless duck- or snipe-shooting, or a little quiet trifling with the rats during the Christmas holidays, after which he will return to the University and try and not be plucked, once more.

Then Euryalus reviled him outright and said, “I gather, then, that you are unskilled in any of the many sports that men generally delight in. Now leave we the priest to marry them, and the masquers to sport round the Maypole, till the last sunbeam be withdrawn from its summit, and the shadows of the forest mingle gloomily in the dance. The AR requires a lot of good maintenance to keep it in the fight and even if you are religious about that maintenance, eventually it will fail to fire, mis-feed, or double feed when it does just remember S. The first S in the acronym S. S is Slap, as in slap the magazine to make sure it is seated properly in the magazine well.

Don’t be shy slapping the magazine, you aren’t going to break it. The P in S. S is for Pull the charging handle. After you have slapped some sense into the magazine you are going to pull the charging handle all the way to the rear.

The O in S. S is for Observe. You are going to physically look into the chamber of the weapon, you are looking to see if there is any obstruction to the chamber, is there a round in the magazine you just slapped, or any other visible reason the weapon didn’t fire. The R in S. S is for Release.

As the title implies, once you have slapped the mag, pulled the charging handle, looked to see there is nothing blocking the chamber or any other visible reason the weapon shouldn’t fire, release the charging handle, make sure not to ride it forward, just let it go! The T in S. S is for Tap the Forward Assist. Ok, you’ve slapped the mag like your girlfriend slaps you, you’ve pulled the charging handle all the way back, you looked down inside the chamber, you’ve let the charging handle go and it went forward taking the bolt with it now you are going to Tap the forward assist a couple of times to make sure the bolt is all the way forward and locked.

The last S in S. S is for Squeeze the Trigger. You’ve slapped it, pulled it, looked at it, released it, tapped it, so now the only thing left is to make it go bang. After doing the S.

T part of S. S get back on target and squeeze the trigger if everything went as planned your weapon just went bang. If It didn’t go bang, try S. S again. If a couple of tries using S. S doesn’t get your weapon to fire again it is time to start looking for other possible causes.
