Priority 4 – Not sure, probably used for medical transports? Gary Member. Joined Jun 8, Messages Location Dundalk. My understanding of the priority codes is this: Priority 1: Immediate medical attention required. Life Threatening illnesss or injury. Usually some sort of medevac helicopter must be called for these kinds of injuries.

Priority 2: Serious injury or illness, but not life threatening. Priority 3: Minory injury or illness. Medical attention may not be required. Priority 4: Medical attention not requred. From my time as a volunteer firefighter in Howard County almost 20 years ago , it was explained to me this way. Pri 1: Immediatly life threatening. Pri 2 non-emergency or emergency : Potential to become life threatening Pri 3: Non-life threatening Pri 4: Deceased That being said I was not an EMT, since cross training was not required at that time.

I just had to pass Firefighter level 2 which included first responder certification. As sort of an aside, when I lived in West Virginia as a kid late 70s I broke my leg femur to be exact. This was a simple break from a slip and fall while running no trauma, no compound fracture, and no exposed bone in other words. I was transported lights and sirens to the hospital. My question is why? Once I joined the fire department , I realized how odd that was.

The only things that I can think of are the hospital was a good miles away on the other side of Charleston, it was the 70’s and liability insure concerns were not as great, or somehow a break of the femur was considered a higher priority I kind of doubt that last one.

Anyone have any ideas? Priorities are judgement calls by the providers based on assesment of the patient’s injuries. Sometimes the priority is a result of a combination of factors including time since the injury and time to the hospital. That is the dividing line between emergency and non emergency transport.

I’m sure there is some kind of ruleset that helps make that determination. I have been a Maryland Emt for 22 years and my wife a founder of the Calvert Co. Md state protocols outlines what each priority should be but it is a judgment call of the providers.
