This graphic shows the average working hours between higher and lower-income groups in America, based on income percentile. When looking at differences between income groups, there are many preconceived notions about the work involved. But what are the actual average working hours for different income groups?

This graphic by Ruben Berge Mathisen uses the latest U. Census data to show the average working hours of Americans at different income levels. The data used for this graphic comes from the U.

This also includes overtime, other jobs, or side gigs. And in surveys across other countries, though with hundreds of respondents instead of thousands, the discrepancy was similar:. Working hours are usually pretty similar though. Similarities arise when comparing average working hours across different countries.

For starters, people living in poorer countries typically work longer hours. According to Our World in Data , the average worker in Cambodia works about 9.

While many factors contribute to this discrepancy in working hours, one large factor cited is tech innovation, or things like physical machines, processes, and systems that make work more efficient and productive. As of , American Samoa ‘s population was There are an estimated 9—10 million Middle Eastern Americans according to the U. Census, [91] including both Arab and non-Arab Americans, [92] comprising 0.

Census population estimates are based on responses to the ancestry question on the census, which makes it difficult to accurately count Middle Eastern Americans. Middle Eastern Americans are counted as White on the census. The expert groups felt that the earlier “White” designation no longer accurately represents MENA identity, so they successfully lobbied for a distinct categorization. Self-identified multiracial Americans numbered 7.

While the colonies and southern states protected White fathers by making all children born to slave mothers be classified as slaves, regardless of paternity, they also banned miscegenation or interracial marriage , most notably between Whites and Blacks.

This did little to stop interracial relationships, except as legal, consensual unions. Demographers state that, due to new waves of immigration, the American people through the early 20th century were mostly multi-ethnic descendants of various immigrant nationalities, who maintained cultural distinctiveness until, over time, assimilation , migration and integration took place.

According to James P. Allen and Eugene Turner from California State University, Northridge , by some calculations in the Census, the multiracial population that is part White which is the largest percentage of the multiracial population , is as follows:. A study found an average of In Robert Stuckert produced a statistical analysis using historical census data and immigration statistics. He concluded that the growth in the White population could not be attributed solely to births in the White population and immigration from Europe, but was also due to people identifying as White who were partly Black.

He concluded that 21 percent of White Americans had some recent African-American ancestors. He also concluded that the majority of Americans of known African descent were partly European and not entirely sub-Saharan African.

More recently, many different DNA studies have shown that many African Americans have European admixture, reflecting the long history in this country of the various populations. The Race, Ethnicity, and Genetics Working Group of the National Human Genome Research Institute notes that “although genetic analyses of large numbers of loci can produce estimates of the percentage of a person’s ancestors coming from various continental populations, these estimates may assume a false distinctiveness of the parental populations, since human groups have exchanged mates from local to continental scales throughout history.

In the census, the non-standard category of “Other” [3] was especially intended to capture responses such as Mestizo and Mulatto , [20] two large multiracial groups in most of the countries of origin of Hispanic and Latino Americans. However, many other responses are captured by the category. In The ancestry of the people of the United States of America is widely varied and includes descendants of populations from around the world.

In addition to its variation, the ancestry of people of the United States is also marked by varying amounts of intermarriage between ethnic and racial groups.

While some Americans can trace their ancestry back to a single ethnic group or population in Europe , Africa , or Asia , these are often first, second and third-generation Americans.

Generally, the degree of mixed heritage increases the longer people’s ancestors have lived in the United States see melting pot. There are several means available to discover the ancestry of the people living in the United States, including genealogy , genetics , oral and written history , and analysis of Federal Population Census schedules; in practice, only few of these have been used for a larger part of the population.

According to the — American Community Survey , the thirty largest ancestry groups in the United States were see above for the OMB self-designation options : [] [] [] [].

However, demographers regard the reported number of English Americans as a serious undercount, as the index of inconsistency is high and many if not most Americans from English stock have a tendency to identify simply as ” Americans ” [] [] [] [] or if of mixed European ancestry, identify with a more recent and differentiated ethnic group.

African Americans had the highest prevalence of having been forced to have sexual intercourse Hispanic adolescent women were the most likely to drink The United States U. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC defines sexual violence as nonconsensual completed or attempted penetration, unwanted non-penetrative sexual contact, or noncontact acts e.

The most likely victims of sexual violence are young and female. Increasing diversity of the U. For adult women, recent data from the CDC report lifetime prevalence of rape as about 1 in 5 for African Americans Identifying the causal factors will enable development of preventive interventions that can then be targeted to the groups at risk.

Binge drinking, or heavy episodic drinking, is most often defined as consuming 5 or more drinks during 1 occasion. This behavior occurs frequently among younger persons; 7. For example, Asian and African Americans tend to report lower levels of binge drinking than other groups. Cross-sectional studies of substance use and forced sexual intercourse find that they frequently co-occur. For example, adolescent women who report drug use, such as marijuana and other illicit drugs, are significantly more likely to report sexual victimization.

Alcohol consumption influences sexual risk behavior, reducing perceptions of individual risk, which may provide increased opportunity for experiencing sexual assault among adolescents who drink alcohol. The YRBS selects respondents based on a 3-stage, cluster sample design through proportional probability methods used to select counties, schools, and then classrooms. Before administering the survey, local parental permission procedures were followed, and students were informed that their participation was anonymous and voluntary.

The self-administered questionnaire was completed in the students’ classrooms. The YRBS public-use data file included responses from 16, adolescents, including 7, women in the weighted sample. However, only women who responded to the questions about forced sex, drinking behavior, drug use, and the demographic variables comprised the sample for this study. Additionally, respondents who reported sexual intercourse before the age of 13 were removed from the sample in an effort to eliminate cases of child sexual abuse.

The YRBS is reported to be a reliable data source of adolescent health behaviors. Binge drinkers responded that they had drunk more than 5 drinks in a row on 1 or more days in the past 30 days. Non-binge drinkers had one or more days of drinking at least 1 drink of alcohol, but not more than five drinks in a row on one or more days in the past 30 days.

Former drinkers were individuals who responded that they had drunk alcohol within their lifetime, but not within the last 30 days, and abstainers were individuals who did not meet any of the above definitions. The category of abstainers was the referent group for the drinking behavior variables. Drug use was operationalized with a composite variable, due to the low prevalence of use of many of the individual drugs. Seven questions in the YRBS ask about lifetime use of drugs, including marijuana, cocaine, glue or aerosol spray cans, heroin, methamphetamines, ecstasy, or injection drugs.

The variable was dichotomous, with lifetime drug use or no lifetime drug use as the two categories. No lifetime drug use was the referent category for the logistic regression analyses. Age was grouped into five categories: 14 and younger, 15, 16, 17, and Eighteen was the referent group for the logistic regression analyses.

Then, we created 2 logistic regression analyses to examine whether racial variation in forced sexual intercourse persisted when controlling for the effects of drug and alcohol use variables. Age was controlled in each of the regression analyses. Overall, the prevalence of forced sexual intercourse among adolescent women was 8. Across all groups, the prevalence of binge drinking was Caucasians had the highest prevalence of binge drinking Asians had the lowest prevalence 7.

Asians had the highest prevalence In total, More than one-third African Americans had the highest prevalence of drug use Binge drinkers had three times greater odds, and current or former drinkers had about two times greater odds of being forced to have sexual intercourse against their wills than abstainers.

Additionally, those who reported any lifetime drug use had about two-and-one-half times the odds of being forced to have sex against their wills than those who never used drugs. According to the current study, the greatest likelihood of forced sexual intercourse among adolescent women was reported by African Americans, and the lowest likelihood by Asians which included Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders.

Several prior studies have reported the highest rate of forced sexual intercourse among African-American adolescent and adult women. While Hispanics were the most likely to report having had a drink at some point in their lives, Caucasians were the most likely to report binge drinking in the past month; Asians were the most likely to report never having drunk alcohol.

Like prior studies, we found that Asians and African Americans reported lower levels of binge drinking compared with Caucasians and Hispanics.

The finding that substance use is a more probable causal factor associated with unwanted sexual experiences provides direction for the content of future preventive interventions. Among the adolescent women studied, Caucasians were the most likely to binge drink, Hispanics the most likely to drink alcohol, and African Americans the most likely to use drugs. Identifying the cultural and other roots of these differences in substance use behavior could be an important step toward targeting interventions to prevent unwanted sexual experiences.

The results of this study should be interpreted in light of several limitations. In addition, the data are cross-sectional, so it is not possible to determine whether substance use preceded forced sexual intercourse, or the reverse.

Furthermore, the YRBS survey is based on self-reported respondent behavior, which has some limitations with respect to validity. Studies of self-reported assessments of substance use by adolescents suggest that it is not greatly under-reported, but sexual activity is more subject to self-report bias.

We found that the prevalence of being forced to have sexual intercourse against one’s will differed for different racial and ethnic groups, with African Americans having the greatest likelihood. Future research should explore the cultural and other roots of substance use behavior among adolescent women from varying racial and ethnic groups as a step toward intervening to reduce unwanted sexual experiences.
